A couple years ago, the words “zone of genius” didn’t make sense to me either.
In fact, those words sounded like a shortcoming.
As a wellness coach, I thought in order to be successful, I had to be able to multitask. I had to be good at it all.
So along with my yoga coaching? I did my TRX certification. I went through a Barre Academy. I learnt and coached Reformer Pilates and worked with physios in injury prehab (especially for rugby players). I did Vipr training, Breathwork coaching, FRC, and even a full certification in Sports Massage.
And…yep. I wouldn’t trade any of those skills. I think you need to throw everything at the wall and then see what sticks.
But what I didn’t realise that buried within me, were gifts that the world needed – and a lot of those things were things that came easy to me – things that didn’t feel like work.
So why was I trying to make myself the poster girl for everything from hype fitness to injury rehab?
If you’ve ever met me – you’ll know. I can be feisty, sure – but most of the time, I’m mellow. One of the highest compliments I’ve ever received was that when I walk into a room, I make everyone release an exhale they didn’t even know they were holding. And that made me realise something: that vibe comes easy to me.
That doesn’t mean I couldn’t do the other things. That doesn’t mean that I couldn’t make a decent living being a jack of all trades.
But would I really make waves, doing a little of everything? Was this spread of my time the best use of it? And more importantly – how was it pushing me? Was this variety making me grow, or was it making me feel like I could just about maintain competence in every area?
I’m telling you this story not because I want to pigeon hole you into doing just one thing. Please, be multi-passionate. Do all the things that light you up.
But that’s the secret.
The things that light you up. If it doesn’t make you feel full, expansive, and the best version of yourself: this is your permission slip from me and Snoop to drop it like it’s f@£king hot.
The world doesn’t need more people who do things because they can. The world needs more people who do things because they CAN’T NOT.
I need to say that again for the people in the back.
Because they HAVE TO. Because it gives them purpose, and connects them to their dharma.
And: here’s the secret: your Zone of Genius is also where the rewards are. It’s where the money is, literally and figuratively. It’s where you’ll feel seen, heard, and challenged, all at once. It’s where you can RULE, like the boss babe you are.
There’s so much that makes you different from anyone else. The universe doesn’t create extras – and as Marie Forleo says, the world needs that very special gift that only you have.
By the way. If you are in search of a new read, I can’t rate her book enough: “Everything is Figureoutable.” Or if you’re running around town between clients and classes, get the audiobook – that’s how I get through most of my reading. If you need a role model, she’s your girl – she’s been so inspirational to me as a woman making mind blowing waves in business.
Alright. I’m back from my little tangent. If you’re in the camp of “sure, sure, that’s great in theory, but how does that help me?” – here are three questions you can ask yourself to start helping you refine your personal brand of BAD BOSS VIBE.
Is it easier for you to demonstrate than to adjust in class? Does it excite you to break down really complicated things? Do you love to blend movement disciplines in a way that is bio-mechanically sound?
In your work, what produces the highest ratio of abundance and satisfaction to the amount of time spent?
This one took me awhile to figure out. I was spending a lot of time with clients that paid well, and that I tolerated. It didn’t excite me, though. I was also teaching a lot of public classes. They made me feel alive – but they paid like crap. And then, there was option 3 – discovering things that both paid well and also made me feel like I was flying high. Stick with this question – I’m living proof it’s MORE THAN worth the effort.
We could roll a hundred different strategies at this question to help us figure it out. I have another post coming out that helps us with just that – but for now, just start letting it marinate in your mind. Let it roll around in your body – and see what comes up for you.
Remember: you’re here to heal. And there are so many out there that need your personal brand of healing. So believe in your power – and remember you’re not alone – I’ll be in your corner, like a personal cheerleader, rooting for you.
